Scientific sisters earn major award at science fair on renewable resources

Madison Hetland and Hannah Hetland, of Mitchell High School, won the bronze award at the I-SWEEEP science fair. The Hetlands exhibited their research, “Constructing a Solar Graphene-Based Supercapacitor,” during the world’s largest science fair on renewable resources May 3-8 in Houston, Texas. The bronze also came with a $150 award.

They qualified for I-SWEEEP through the South Central South Dakota Regional Science and Engineering Fair March 21 at Dakota Wesleyan University. The Hetlands were named the I-SWEEEP contestants, as well as winning the senior division group project; the Association for Women Geoscientists award; first place from the United States Army Recruiting Center; and United States Department of Navy/Marine Corps senior division placing.
